Work begins for new Dawson City Hospital and Health Services Facility
June 23, 2010
DAWSON CITY – Health and Social Services Minister Glenn Hart, Yukon Hospital Corporation (YHC) Board of Trustees, Chair Craig Tuton, and Klondike MLA Steve Nordick today hefted a few shovels of dirt to mark the start of construction on the new hospital and health services facility in Dawson City.
Actual work will begin following the issuance of the YESAA decision document.
“YESAB has recommended that the project proceed, however they have requested that several conditions be in place prior to work starting. We want to make sure that all the specified terms and conditions are addressed and that government has given the recommendations fair and full consideration as required under the YESAA legislation,” said Hart.
Based on the latest design and costing estimates for this facility, the Yukon Government recently provided the YHC with final approval to proceed for financing.
“This is very exciting for Dawson City and we wanted to announce the progress that has been made even though we are still waiting for the YESAA decision that will allow the project to proceed,” said Steve Nordick, Klondike MLA.
Nordick said all parties wanted to take advantage of the fact that the YHC representatives would be in the community to present the latest interior and exterior design to the community in a public meeting.
”When we spoke to the residents of Dawson City previously, we committed to meet with them once our approvals were in place. With the YESAA recommendations and recent government approvals we are pleased to be able to show the design of the new Hospital and Health Services Facility to Dawson residents”, said Craig Tuton, Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Yukon Hospital Corporation.
“We look forward to a close working relationship with the Yukon Hospital Corporation over the next few years as we transition our services to a hospital in Dawson,” said Hart.
Dawson City Mayor Peter Jenkins and Tr’ondek Hwech’in Chief Eddie Taylor were also in attendance at the sod turning ceremony.
