Home>A Message from the CEO
The mandate of the Yukon Hospital Corporation (YHC) as stated in the Yukon’s Health Act is to provide hospital and medical care to meet the needs of Yukoners. At the time of health devolution in 1993, the Whitehorse General Hospital (WGH) was transferred from Health Canada to the Yukon Hospital Corporation. Since then, the Corporation has worked to develop and expand programs and upgrade the facilities at WGH.
One of the ways the YHC is preparing to meet the health care needs of Yukoners is through the construction of the new Staff Residence on the WGH campus. This facility will provide short term housing for visiting specialists required to provide improved access to specialist services for Yukoners. It will also position the YHC in greater position to attract other health care professionals to relocate to the Yukon. In a highly competitive market, the recruitment and retention of health care providers becomes paramount. Providing a convenient, pleasant place to stay may make the difference whether a potential employee decides to accept a position with the YHC or not.
Meeting the needs of Yukoners became more evident on April 1 of this year as the YHC assumed responsibility of the Watson Lake Hospital, while continuing to with plans for constructing a hospital in Dawson City. These new initiatives are milestones in the YHC’s development as a provider of acute care services in the Yukon.
Ensuring all Yukoners have access to a higher level of care closer to home, today and into the future is a key message for the YHC.
