Total Joint navigators

The Total Joint Navigators in Therapy Services at Whitehorse General Hospital are available for support and guidance to patients having total hip or knee joint surgery. We assist in creating a seamless flow of services to help the patient through the total joint replacement process, whether their surgery is at WGH or down South. This service is free to Yukoners preparing for a total hip or knee replacement.

In order to ensure that patients have a good understanding of their upcoming surgery, how to prepare themselves and their homes, and what to expect post-surgery, they are invited to attend a pre-operative class in Therapy Services at WGH. Patients from the communities can attend the class via telehealth if required. This group session is scheduled on an as-needed basis, and facilitated by a physiotherapist, dietitian and surgical nurse.

We also loan out patient education material with Yukon-specific information, provide referrals to Red Cross for necessary adaptive equipment, and pre-book outpatient physiotherapy appointments.

Referrals to the Total Joint Navigator may be made by patients, family physicians and orthopedic surgeons.

Referral Process

All clients must have a physician’s referral to receive therapy. All referrals are reviewed and triaged for urgent care needs. Our goal is to see all urgent referrals within 7 days. Non urgent referrals wait longer for an appointment.

Special Considerations for Out of Town Clients

Clients from rural communities do not need to attend the screening interview. Referrals from community health centres/nursing stations should be faxed to Therapy Services. The client will be contacted regarding their appointments. Generally these clients will be seen for two appointments over two consecutive days. Arrangements for travel and accommodation are the client’s responsibility.

Costs for Services

There may be costs for products supplied or recommended by the therapist. Some of these costs may be covered by health insurance plans such as Seniors Program, Chronic Disease Program, Non-Insured Benefit program or an Employer Extended Health Plan. Clients are responsible for any costs not covered by any health plan. Ask your therapist for more information.

Cancelation Policy

Please call at least 24 hours in advance to cancel an appointment.

Failure to attend your initial appointment or two follow up appointments without notification may result in discharge from therapy.

We strive to provide services within reasonable time frames. Please help us serve all our clients by attending scheduled appointments and by giving 24 hours notice when canceling an appointment. Let us know if you are available on short notice and you name will be added to our short notice list.
