Neurologists are physicians who have additional education and training in the diagnosis and treatment of nervous system disorders affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. Patients are referred to the neurologist for conditions such as: strokes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, and ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). They may also be asked to assess people with headaches, sleep disorders, brain or spinal cord injuries or conditions of the peripheral nervous system.
They perform examinations on the nerves of the head and neck, check muscle strength, balance and ambulation. Assessment may also include checking reflexes, sensations, memory, speech, and other cognitive abilities. Diagnostic testing available to neurologists in the Yukon include EMG/NCV (electromyography/nerve conduction velocity), CT scans (computed axial tomography and lumbar puncture (spinal tap).
Visiting Neurologists send their recommendations to the family doctor in regards to treatment and follow-up. Botox treatments are provided by the neurologist in the Specialist Clinic for a restricted number of conditions.
