Secure Medical Unit

The Secure Medical Unit (SMU) is a recent addition to the West Unit at the Whitehorse General Hospital. Its design, five single rooms and two seclusion rooms, in a controlled environment, is to allow for the optimal care and treatment of clients with a primary diagnosis of a mental health concern, during an acute phase of the illness.

Dedicated mental health nurses (registered nurses, registered psychiatric nurses and licensed practical nurses) staff the unit around the clock to provide assessment, support, medications and education.

The SMU team works with your medical doctor and also includes a psychiatrist and mental health social worker.

The team uses a patient centered approach to treatment and discharge planning; we value patient and family input in the plan of care. The SMU strives to be a safe and comfortable environment where clients can work, with the help of the team, to improve and maintain their mental health.
