Whitehorse General Hospital performs a wide variety of testing, either in-house or by referral to a specialized laboratory. All biological specimens can be tested. Some functional tests are also done such as heart monitoring and lung function.
Most blood work is returned to the ordering physician within 24 hours of collection, however, the results of some test may take up to 14 days or more.

Testing is performed by Medical Laboratory Technologists that are registered with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
The laboratory at WGH is comprised of Laboratory Aides, Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA) and Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLT).
The Medical Laboratory Assistants are responsible for the collection and handling of all laboratory samples. The Medical Laboratory Technologists perform sophisticated laboratory test that help diagnose and treat disease. We use complex instruments and electronic equipment and ensure that test results are accurate.
You are referred to the laboratory by your physician or specialist.
The outpatient collection laboratory is located in the WGH atrium adjacent the Admitting/Discharge desk.
Appointments for general blood work are not required. However some special testing, Electrocardiograms, Holter Monitors, and Pulmonary Function Testing do require an appointment. Appointments should be made by the ordering physician.
