Patient Services

The Whitehorse General Hospital is a 49 bed, acute care hospital and the primary health care facility in the Yukon.

In-patient Units

These include a Medical Unit with a Secure Medical Unit, Pediatrics, a 3 bed Intensive Care Unit, a Surgical unit and a Maternity Unit.

While many patients receive care for a specific medical or surgical condition, some may have a need for a combination of medical and surgical care. (e.g. a diabetic who is having surgery.)
This means you may be admitted to either the East or the West Unit. Our goal is to provide collaborative care in the most appropriate location where skilled staff will meet your individual needs.

WGH has a 24/7 Emergency, two Operating Rooms, a Minor Procedure Room and a Surgical Day Care Unit. WGH offers full Laboratory services, Pharmacy, and Therapies Program. The Medical Imaging Unit includes a state-of-the-art 128 slice CT scanner, digital mammography, ultrasound and radiography. These programs support both in-patient and out-patient needs within Yukon.

Visiting Specialist Clinic

WGH hosts over 35 visiting specialists. Surgical specialists include Ear, Nose and Throat, Opthamology, and Orthopedics, which include joint replacements and other advanced surgeries. Other specialists include Internal Medicine, Cardiology including Echocardiogram and Pacemaker Clinics, Neurology, Rheumatology, Oncology, Dermatology, and Nephrology.

Other out-patient services

These include Cardiac Stress Testing and Chemotherapy. WGH has eight telehealth stations within various departments, which support specialist consultations and follow-ups for patients, as well as patient and staff education.

Nutritional Services

This program provides food services for in-patients and staff, and includes a Diabetes Education Centre. Dieticians for the community and Copper Ridge Place are provided through this department. WGH partners with the Yukon Government (YG) in the Diabetes Collaborative Program.

The Nutritional Food Services Program, together with the First Nations Health Program, supports a First Nations Dietetic Internship Program. This program has graduated 19 Dieticians since its inception 10 years ago.
